Endless Will Host Diaspora Global Music Program Thursday, January 17th on WORT

Hi Folks,

Endless will be hosting Diaspora this Thursday morning from 9am-12noon. You can tune in to WORT 89.9FM or hit the website at http://www.wortfm.org/. You have been warned.

Diaspora airs every Thursday at 9am with long-time host Terry O' and features new and collected musics from all parts of the globe. Not really a folk show, you will find jazz from Africa beside pop tunes from Brazil, deftly juxtaposed with other surprises.

These first two playlists you will find below are of recent programs hosted by Endless: Pan Africa and The Vinyl Resting Place. They are both still available on the WORT archives for a couple days yet. Dig around, you'll find them. The third playlist posted here is from The Vinyl Resting Place program which Endless hosted way back in November. Some video highlights should be posted soon if they aren't there already. Sorry for the lag, anyone who cares, the holidays kicked some asses.

Playlist for The Vinyl Resting Place from January 3rd 2013
 With your host Endless

I played quite a few pieces featuring Mel Lyman on this weeks show. Mel had a family. Some would have called it a cult.
In the days before the internet made everything less mysterious, the urban legend was that Mr. Lyman used to indoctrinate initiates into the fold by dosing them with large quantities of LSD and then whispering his whole tripped-out view of the-way-it-is over and over into their ear. He would do this for quite some time, until they really got it. According to Wikipedia, there is a Rolling Stone article from 1971 that described "an authoritarian and dysfunctional environment, including an elite "Karma Squad" of ultra-loyalists to enforce Lyman's discipline" and the "predilection for astrology, and isolation rooms for disobedient Family members." Family members disputed these reports.
Probably the most well known (and verifiable) story, is of him playing his harmonica to sooth the savage beast that was the crowd at the infamous 1965 Newport Folk Festival, after Bob Dylan had everyone practically tearing their hair out over his electric guitar onslought. As the crowd fled the stadium, Lyman began a 20 minute improvisation on the traditional religious hymn "Rock of Ages" that stopped folks in their tracks and made them weep like children. It is legendary to this day. Check out a little book by Joe Boyd called White Bicycles, for more on that gig. Here are two tunes.
Check out the videos below the playlist for more on Mel Lyman...

Some friends and I actually visited the tower you see behind the Lyman Family on the back of the American Avatar LP. (first screen shot in the video below) The house at the address where Mel lived, AKA The Fort Hill Community, was still standing across the way. Supposedly it is still inhabited by the Fam. As I remember, it's a cool little joint with more than a few cars piled up behind a wrought iron gate which is connected to a 7 or 8 foot high stone wall.
While we curiously watched for any signs of activity, a horde of small children poured out of the house and over the wall. Some of them using a gnarly tree to help them traverse the high structure.

This track is from the LP "American Avatar" and features Lisa Kindred on vocals.

   Breakthrough With The Mirror Man
An interesting short film on Mel Lyman, Timothy Leary, LSD and God...

Below is a video featuring Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin from the hippie cult flick Zabriskie Point on the Dick Cavett Show. Mark Frechette was a member of the Lyman Family and he mentions that "The community is for one purpose. And that's to serve Mel Lyman. He's the leader & founder of that community. And its moving spirit."

And lastly,  a little bit of Mel with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. I have to agree with YouTube commenter rpare666 on this one, if I can quote: "Always much more Kweskin, less Lyman (the asshole)".

The best defense against brainwashing is to not consume mainstream media; by looking under rocks and around corners for things outside the norm, you can protect yourself from the hive mind.

Endless Hosts "Fire Worship" This Week and "The Vinyl Resting Place" NEXT Week.

Hey Folks,
I neglected to announce that I was hosting 'Fire Worship' again this week. If you missed it, please check it out at the WORT archive. The show will be archived for two weeks. (If you listen during the second week, you will have to listen to the following week's program first, as both programs are archived in the same file... or you could always skip ahead 3 hours to hear the program listed here... confused yet?)

There are some video highlights and the playlist from this weeks show, listed below.

By the way, I also hosted 'Rolling With Scissors' a few weeks back and I have updated my previous post with the playlist from that show, if your curious about what I play when I'm not spinning Jazz. Ambiance - 'Ebun'

I leave you with this excellent interview of Giuseppi Logan from 1966. I featured a track from his "More Giuseppi Logan" LP during Fire Worship. Featured below the interview video is a piece from his first LP on ESP-Disk. It's titled 'Tabla Suite' and it blows my mind, everytime.

Apparently Giuseppi was homeless for some time. Somebody found him playing a very battered instrument in Tompkins Square Park on the lower east side of New York. According to what I read on YouTube they fixed it up or bought him a new one. Something like that. That occurance and a filmmaker named Suzannah Troy seemed to both have been instrumental in helping the world rediscover Giuseppi Logan, or at least letting us know he was alive.

After Suzannah Troy's short films were made of him playing in Tompkins Square, he was featured in Signal to Noise magazine and he started playing a few gigs here and there. From what I have been able to gather, as of April 2012, he was still living in New York and performing as a street musician. The last video is a testament to the endearing qualities of this man and his music...

Endless Hosts "Rolling With Scissors" EARLY Tuesday Morning (Coming Down)

Hey All!

Endless filled in for Lucas, Prince of Darkness on the Monday night / Tuesday morning musical free-for-all "Rolling With Scissors"

Endless Hosts 'The Vinyl Resting Place' This Thursday Evening

UPDATE:

Endless, long time DJ at WORT, did not host 'In One End' last week. It actually was hosted by Brian. But if you need yer Endless fix, he actually gets to host 'The Vinyl Resting Place' for the second week in a row! Tune in, Thursday Sept. 27th at 11pm.
That's W.O.R.T. 89.9fm community radio, by the way. Broadcasting out of Madison, Wisconsin. In One End starts at 2am and rolls for three hours... if you missed it, shows are archived for two weeks HERE. And you can listen to WORT streaming live news, music and local programming 24 hours a day.

Also, as promised, Endless hosted The Vinyl Resting Place last week so Mr. Vinyl Ritchie could check out the Melvins at the High Noon Saloon. Bet that was cool.

Here is the rockin' Playlist from the show and don't miss it on the archives!

Featured on the show was the epic "Butterfly Bleu" by Iron Butterfly with Pinera and Rhino. Here is a great video of the same tune live. Pt. 1 is available as well but this is where it gets trippy...
